Genre Fiction, edited by Professor John Lennard of The University of the West Indies. Lennard takes the view that popular fiction is a sensitive barometer of society, and that its creators tend to have very sharp noses for what is wrong in society. His Sightlines are crammed with annotation to prove the point, showing works like Reginald Hill’s On Beulah’s Height and Ian McDonald’s ‘Chaga Saga’ in their social context, i.e. British policing and AIDS in Africa. Sightlines are intended as a resource for anyone teaching Cultural Studies, or including popular fiction in their Literature courses.
